Here's How To Make Non-Toxic Dishwasher Detergent

Hello, all my SBA fam!

One of my favorite things is to help my SBA community learn how to make their own non-toxic versions of commonly used conventional products.

From making our own DIY hairspray as an alternative to popular aerosol hairsprays, to learning how to make our own non-toxic whitening toothpaste as an alternative to chemical + fluoride-filled toothpaste... We love helping you live your healthiest life in every way!

Well, this month we have a few more helpful DIYs that will not only help you reduce toxic load in your life, but also will help you save money! Yes, please =)

Today, we're going to be learning how to make our own non-toxic dishwasher detergent!

This is a staple product for most of us, but it seems many people don't know how many unhealthy chemicals are in conventional dishwasher detergents.

It seems like an oxymoron to be washing your dishes in toxic chemicals... but, that's essentially what you're doing when you use popular, non-natural dishwasher detergents. These chemicals stay on your dishes once washed, and when you're eating from that washed plate or drinking from that washed cup, you're essentially getting a side helping of toxin chemicals into your system.

Here's the good news... my toxin-free dishwasher detergent is SO EASY to make and helps you rest assured that you're not ingesting unnecessary toxins. This is by far my favorite dishwasher detergent DIY yet and I use it every time I wash a load of dishes.

Before we get into the DIY, I just want to give a little disclaimer below.

Please note that all water is different and depending on where you live, and how hard your water is, you may have to adjust the ingredients. You could switch out the washing soda for baking soda and try that or another DIY recipe online. There are a lot! Maybe search for one from a person who lives in your area and see what works for them.

Alright, let's get into it!

Ingredients:
1 c. borax
1 c. washing soda
1/2 c. salt
1/2 c. citric acid

Directions: measure all ingredients as stated above, and mix them together in a container. Use your mixing utensil to break up any clumps or shake the ingredients in the container.

When ready to use, place 1 tablespoon in the dishwasher detergent area of your washer and enjoy clean dishes.

Note: this detergent works great for us and doesn't leave water marks - but we do rinse and sometimes wash our dishes before putting them in the dishwasher so not sure how this would work with dishes that aren't rinsed well.

Wishing you the best,

Chelsea Henderson (Founder & Formulator)
